And while the original version has a definite fall and farmhouse feel, don’t feel like you have to stick with those colors! This simple star quilt design would be beautiful in so many different fabric combinations.

What Makes Harvest Stars Beginner-Friendly?
One of my favorite things about Harvest Stars is that it uses familiar patchwork techniques to create a quilt that looks much more complicated than it actually is.
The quilt is made from two main block designs:
Ohio Star-inspired star blocks
Nine-patch blocks
Both are classic quilt blocks that are approachable for beginning quilters.
The star blocks use a quarter-square triangle technique made from half-square triangle units. If you’ve already made half-square triangles, this is a great opportunity to use that skill in a new way.
The nine-patch blocks are simple to piece and create the gingham-inspired background that ties the entire quilt together.
The result is a quilt that has plenty of traditional quilting charm without requiring complicated piecing.
A Scrappy Star Quilt
You know I love a good scrappy quilt!
For the original Harvest Stars quilt, I used a variety of yellow and golden cotton quilting fabrics for the stars.
Instead of using one fabric for every star, each star features a different fabric. This gives the quilt a wonderful scrappy look while keeping the overall color palette cohesive.
If you have a collection of yellow, gold, or mustard scraps in your sewing room, this would be a great quilt to use them in.
You could also pull from a coordinated fabric collection or use fat quarters to create your own scrappy combination.
Don’t Have Yellow Fabric?
No problem!
One of the best things about a simple quilt design like Harvest Stars is how easily you can change the color palette.
Try:
- Gold, mustard, and rust for a warm autumn quilt
- Red, green, and cream for a Christmas quilt
- Navy, blue, and cream for a classic country look
- Pink, coral, and cream for a cheerful spring quilt
- Black, gray, and cream for a more modern farmhouse look
- Reproduction fabrics for a vintage-inspired quilt

The design is simple enough that the fabrics can really become the star of the show!
Inspired by Wisconsin’s Golden Harvest
The inspiration for Harvest Stars came from the beautiful Wisconsin countryside.
As summer comes to an end, the green cornfields begin to turn golden. Add in the golden bales of hay scattered throughout the countryside and you have the perfect autumn color palette.
I love the way the colors of the original quilt reflect that transition from summer into fall.
The yellow and gold stars remind me of the harvest fields, while the gray and cream fabrics keep the quilt soft and neutral.
It’s a color combination that feels warm and welcoming without being overly seasonal.
Farmhouse Style Meets Traditional Quilting
If you love farmhouse-style decorating, you’ll probably recognize why I paired these colors and blocks together.
Nothing says farmhouse to me quite like gingham!
The nine-patch blocks and sashing in Harvest Stars create the appearance of a simple gingham background. Pair that with traditional-looking star blocks and you get a quilt that feels both classic and fresh.
This is one of those quilts that would look right at home in a farmhouse kitchen, cozy living room, guest bedroom, or cabin.
And because the design is traditional, it can easily work with vintage-inspired fabrics as well.
The Star Blocks
The star blocks in Harvest Stars are inspired by the traditional Ohio Star quilt block.
Ohio Star is a classic quilt block that has been used by quilters for generations. It is recognizable, timeless, and surprisingly versatile.
For Harvest Stars, the star blocks are made using quarter-square triangle units created from half-square triangles.
If you’re new to this technique, don’t let the name intimidate you!
The quilt pattern walks you through the construction so you can build the blocks step by step.
And if you’ve already made half-square triangles, you’ll recognize many of the same concepts.
Choosing Fabric for Harvest Stars
The original quilt uses:
Yellow and gold fabrics for the stars
Gray fabrics for the background
Cream fabric for additional contrast
A dark gray print for the binding
I love using several different fabrics within the yellow and gold portion of the quilt. It adds movement and makes each star feel a little different.
When choosing your own fabrics, the most important thing is to create enough contrast between the star fabrics and the background.
Don’t be afraid to mix prints!
Small-scale prints, ginghams, florals, dots, plaids, and tone-on-tone fabrics can all work beautifully together.
Turn Harvest Stars into a Christmas Quilt
Here’s another fun idea for this pattern!
Change the yellow and gray fabrics to red, green, and cream and you’ve got a completely different look.
The simple star design makes Harvest Stars especially easy to adapt for different seasons and holidays.
You could even make the quilt in a more neutral palette and add seasonal color through your home décor.

Here are a few things to keep in mind as you make your quilt:
Mix Your Fabrics
