The Granny Love Quilt Pattern combines two classic quilt-inspired designs – granny square blocks and heart blocks – to create a sweet, scrappy quilt that’s full of personality.
The original quilt finishes at 42″ × 42″, making it a wonderful size for a baby quilt, picnic quilt, wall hanging, or tablecloth quilt.
And there’s even more to love about this pattern!
The complete Granny Love PDF includes directions for three different projects:
42″ × 42″ quilt
18″ × 18″ pillow
Throw quilt
So you can choose the project that’s right for you—or make all three!

One Pattern. Three Ways to Make It.
One of my favorite things about the Granny Love Quilt Pattern is its versatility.
42″ × 42″ Granny Love Quilt
The original Granny Love quilt finishes at 42″ × 42″.
This is a great size for a baby quilt, but don’t stop there! It also works beautifully as a small picnic quilt, wall hanging, or tablecloth quilt.
The combination of colorful granny squares and hearts gives this quilt a cheerful, vintage-inspired feel that’s perfect for showing off your favorite fabrics.
18″ × 18″ Granny Love Pillow
The Granny Love design also makes an adorable 18″ × 18″ quilted pillow.
This smaller project is a fun way to bring the granny square and heart design into your home without committing to a full quilt.
It would be especially sweet in a sewing room, nursery, guest room, or as a handmade gift.
Granny Love Throw Quilt
Want to make a larger quilt?
The Granny Love pattern also includes directions for a throw quilt version.
The same sweet combination of granny squares and hearts takes on a whole new look when it’s expanded into a larger quilt.
It’s a wonderful option when you want a cozy quilt to use and enjoy for years to come.
One pattern gives you three ways to use this design!

A Scrappy-Friendly Quilt Pattern
Granny Love was designed with a scrappy look in mind.
I love using a combination of light, medium, and dark prints to give each block its own personality.
Fat eighths and fat quarters work especially well for this project, making it a great pattern for using fabrics already in your stash.
For my original quilt, I used a mix of blues and teals, corals and oranges, greens, and yellow-golds against a white background.

But there are absolutely no rules!
Try pinks and reds for a traditional heart-inspired palette. Use bright rainbow colors for a cheerful baby quilt. Or choose reproduction-style fabrics for a more vintage look.
The background fabric provides plenty of space for the colorful blocks to stand out.
Make It Your Own With Color
The scrappy nature of Granny Love is part of what makes this quilt so much fun.
You can:
- Mix lots of different prints
- Use fat eighths and fat quarters from your stash
- Create a rainbow of colors
- Work within a limited color palette
- Use a single fabric collection
- Choose a light background to make the blocks pop
- Coordinate your binding with one of the colors in the quilt
Try varying the colors from block to block rather than making every granny square identical.
That little bit of randomness helps create the charming scrappy look that makes Granny Love special.

Granny Squares + Hearts
The Granny Love quilt combines eight granny square blocks and eight heart blocks in the 42″ × 42″ version.
The granny square blocks give the quilt a traditional patchwork feel, while the heart blocks add a playful touch.
Together, they create a design that feels both familiar and whimsical.
The blocks are pieced using straightforward techniques, making this a great project for a confident beginner and beyond.

What You’ll Learn
Granny Love is a wonderful project for practicing accurate piecing and working with small patchwork pieces.
You’ll work with:
Rotary cutting
Small patchwork squares
Granny square construction
Piecing heart blocks
Accurate ¼” seams
Pressing seams for easy block assembly
Nesting seams
Quilt top assembly
Basic quilting and binding
If you’re newer to quilting, take your time with the small pieces and focus on accurate cutting and consistent seam allowances.
A little extra care during piecing will make assembling your quilt top much easier.

A Great Stash-Busting Project
Have a collection of fabrics you love but don’t know what to do with?
Granny Love is a great excuse to dig through your stash!
The pattern works beautifully with a variety of prints, so you don’t need to have a perfectly coordinated fabric collection.
Pull fabrics in several colors and values and let them play together.
This is also a great pattern to keep in mind when you have leftover fat eighths or fat quarters from other projects.
Sometimes the best quilts come from the fabrics you already have.
