Hamburger Patty Melt ~ Gooey Cheesy meets Buttery Toasty!

hamburger patty melt

This hamburger patty melt is basically a bacon cheeseburger with all the fixings!  Except instead of a bun it’s all sandwiched together on buttery bread and toasted to a golden crisp!  So easy!!!

This is my go-to burger when I haven’t picked up hamburger buns.  Or when I want a buttery, crispy burger experience!!!

Ingredients for the Hamburger Patty Melt…

I like to use a ¼ pound of lean ground chuck for making a hamburger patty melt.  Sweet onion adds that oniony goodness that is a must for great burger flavor!

At our house we call oniony hamburgers “fair burgers”.  Because they taste just like the burgers you get at the annual county fair!!

For this patty melt I used slices of Colby Jack cheese.  Really, any cheese that melts well will work.  Cheddar, Swiss, or…no judgement here!…Velveeta.  Lol!!

These patty melts also have crispy slices of bacon included!  All held together between two pieces of bread.

Tomato, lettuce, sliced onion, and pickles top off this little masterpiece.  Oh…and of course…ketchup and brown mustard!

Making the Hamburger Patty Melt…

Form ¼ pound of ground beef into a ball.  Use your hands to flatten and shape it into a nice round hamburger patty.  I usually make about 4 of these burgers at a time with a pound of ground beef.

Here’s my trick for a tasty burger!  You’re going to this it’s really weird, but trust me.  The burgers turn out so good and juicy!!

Pour about an inch of water in a large skillet and heat it to boiling over medium high heat.

boiling onions

Cut up a sweet onion into ½” slices and add the onion to the boiling water.  Then place the burgers in the onion water too!

Boil the burgers for about 3 minutes on each side so they’re thoroughly cooked through.  If the water starts to get low, just add more to keep the burgers at least ½ covered in onion water.

Remove the cooked burgers to plate the has a paper towel on it.  This will help soak up a little of the extra water.  Salt and pepper to taste.

Butter one side of two slices of bread.  Take the two slices of bread (buttered sides on the outside) and sandwich 1-2 slices of cheese, a few slices of bacon, and the cooked burger.

Buttered side down, fry the “sandwich” on a flat skillet over low heat.  Use a spatula to keep peeking underneath to make sure the butter bread doesn’t burn.

When the bread is a nice golden brown, use two spatulas to hold it all together as you carefully flip it over.  Brown the other side too!

By the time both sides are browned the cheese should be all ooey and gooey and oozing out!  Oh my gosh my mouth is watering just thinking how yummy these patty melts are!

Carefully lift the “lid” off the patty melt and add whatever toppings you’d like.  Lettuce, tomato slices, sliced red onion, pickles, etc.  The works!!!  Add ketchup and mustard to your taste.

These patty melts go great with Homemade Sweet Potato Fries!!!
