These potatoes have been a family favorite for years! They are the requested side dish for most of our birthday dinners and holiday meals!

Ingredients for Cheesy Potato Recipe

Besides be DELICIOUS! one of the reasons these potatoes are so popular is because they are such a snap to make! Using a bag of frozen hash browns, there’s no peeling or slicing needed!!

Along with the hash browns, the butter, half & half, and parmesan cheese add a depth of dreamy creaminess to die for!

Just a little onion, salt, and pepper and that’s it!

Prep for the Oven

You’ll want to mix all the ingredients together before putting the dish in the oven to bake.

These cheesy potatoes turn out best when you give the dish a head start in the microwave or on the stove.

By melting the butter ahead of time and adding it in, it’s easy to mix everything together nicely.

Here is THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP! Sprinkle the 1 cup of reserved parmesan cheese evenly all over the top of the casserole full of the potato mixture.

My family almost trips over each other to get the first scoop of these baked cheesy potato au gratins to get a good scoop of cheesy topping. In fact, my boys usually tease their dad over him hogging all the cheese on the top, lol!

I’m not going to lie, this is the best part of these cheesy potatoes. After all, it’s the cheese that separates au gratins from boring old scalloped potatoes.

Bake and Serve

Bake the au gratins in a buttered casserole dish for about 45 minutes at 375 degrees. I usually start to keep an eye on them at about 30 minutes in, to check on the color of the topping.

Once the cheese on the top is golden brown and the potatoes are bubbly, they’re done!

Serve these au gratins right from the casserole, so the cheesy topping stays in place. These are such a pretty dish to serve!! They retain their heat very well, so if the potatoes are done before the other items in your meal you’ll be ok.

Au gratin potatoes go so well with baked beans and bbq ribs. Below is a plateful, along with my previously shared recipe — Crazy Beans.
