Choosing Fabrics for Your Birch Gnomes
Choosing fabrics is always one of my favorite parts of making a new quilt!
For this design, I used a variety of gray prints for the gnome hats and bodies, white fabric for their fluffy beards, and peach fabric for their little noses. The birch trees are made with a combination of cream prints, while medium and light gray solid fabrics create the background.
I especially love using cream fabrics with darker prints to give the birch trees the appearance of real birch bark. Look for small-scale patterns, dots, and interesting textures to add character to your trees.

Don’t worry about finding the exact fabrics I used. This is a wonderful project for shopping your stash and using leftover fat quarters. The more variety you add, the more personality your little gnomes and trees will have!
And remember, there are no rules when it comes to scrappy quilting. Have fun choosing your favorite fabrics!
A Fun and Unique Birch Tree Quilt Block
One of the most interesting parts of this quilt is the way the birch tree blocks are constructed.
Rather than using traditional pieced triangles or appliqué, the branches are created by cutting apart sections of gray fabric and inserting narrow and wider strips of cream fabric.

The result is a fun, improvisational-looking birch tree that gives each block its own personality. No two trees need to look exactly alike, just like the beautiful birch trees growing throughout our Northwoods!
This is a great technique to experiment with and a wonderful way to add a little creativity to your quilting.

What You’ll Learn When Making This Gnome Table Runner
The Birch Gnomes Table Runner is a fun project for practicing several useful quilting techniques.

You’ll learn how to construct the gnome blocks using simple piecing and fusible appliqué, create the unique birch tree blocks with inserted fabric strips, and assemble the blocks into a finished table runner.

The project also provides an opportunity to practice accurate rotary cutting, pressing seams to reduce bulk, layering a quilt sandwich, machine quilting, and finishing with a traditional quilt binding.

The detailed instructions and printable templates make the construction process easier to follow, even if you’re still building your quilting confidence.
