Fabric Requirements to Make the Mushroom Quilt Block

The best part about making this adorable mushroom block is that you can pull fabric from your stash or use scraps!  If you don’t have scraps just head on over to your local quilt shop to purchase the following fabric!  Or you can order fabric online from Fat Quarter Shop or Connecting Threads!

My stash is way out of control, so I chose fabrics from my stash to make this simple quilt block!

I decided to make a red mushroom with a white stem and white spots! When I think of mushrooms I pictured this fungi living in the forest!!

So I used a paisley print light forest green fabric for the background.

You could make orange, yellow, blue or even purple mushrooms! With any color of spots! Make this beginner quilt block as trippy as you’d like!!

Colorful Mushroom Head: 1/8 yard or 9” x 13” piece

Light Green Background for Mushroom: less than 1/8 yard, at least 4 1/2″ wide pieces

White Tone-on-Tone for Spots and Stem: less than 1/8 yard, at least 4 1/2″ wide pieces

Double-sided Fusible Web (like Wonder Under): 3” x 10” piece

Supplies + Tools Needed to Make the Mushroom Quilt Block

Grab your favorite rotary cutter!  I like to use the Fiskars Heavy-Duty Comfort Loop Rotary Cutter (65 mm).  I can cut fabric all day with this baby!!

You’ll also need a cutting mat.  I have a large Fiskars cutting mat that was my mom’s, I don’t think I’ll ever be able to part with it!

But I also have a few smaller cutting mats which work just great!!  I love the 18” x 24” Fiskars cutting mat too!

And you’ll need a plastic quilt ruler.  My favorite ones are the 8 1/2″ x 24” Omnigrip ruler and the 6 1/2” Easy Square, Jr!

If you don’t have these items, you can pick up a set of all three here!

You’ll also need a scissors, iron and pressing mat, stick pins, and thread!

And you’ll need a fine mechanical pencil or washable marking pen.

Cutting Directions for Making the Mushroom Quilt Block

Use a rotary cutter to cut out the following pieces:

Colorful Mushroom Head: 1 – 8 1/2″ x 12 1/2″ piece

Light Green Background for Mushroom: 2 – 4 1/2″ x 4 1/2″; 2 – 3 1/2″ x 3 1/2″; 2 – 2” x 2”; and 2 – 1 1/2″ x 1 1/2″ pieces

White Tone-on-Tone Stem: 1 – 4 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ piece

I’ll discuss how to cut out the spots for the mushrooms a bit further down in this post!

Making the Mushroom Quilt Block

Now that you have all of your pieces cut to make this whimsical quilt block let’s sew it together!!

Use a straight edge (like a small quilt ruler) and a mechanical pencil or marking pen to draw a diagonal line the back of the 3 1/2″, 2” and 1 1/2″ background pieces.

Sew the Mushroom Head Unit for the Mushroom Quilt Block

Pin the 3 1/2″ pieces to two corners along a long edge of the mushroom head piece.  The diagonal lines should run perpendicular to the corner of the mushroom piece.

Sew these corners together along the drawn line.  Be careful to remove the stick pins before you sew over them!

Trim the outside of the corners 1/4″ from the seam.

Press the seams toward the green corners.

Pin the 2″ pieces to the other two corners of the mushroom head piece.  The diagonal lines should run perpendicular to the corner of the mushroom piece.

Sew these corners together along the drawn line.  Be careful to remove the stick pins before you sew over them!

Trim the outside of the corners 1/4″ from the seam.

Press the seams toward the green corners.

I used a wooded seam roller to get my corners to lay even flatter!

The small green corners will be the bottom of the mushroom head.

Sew the Stem Unit for the Mushroom Quilt Block

Pin the 1 1/2″ pieces to two corners of the white stem piece.  The diagonal lines should run perpendicular to the corner of the stem piece.

Sew these corners together along the drawn line.  Be careful to remove the stick pins before you sew over them!

Trim the outside of the corners 1/4″ from the seam.

Press the seams toward the green corners.

The green corners form the bottom of the stem!

Sew the Block Units Together

Now that you have your mushroom head and your stem units all prepared it’s time to sew the block together!

Lay out the two 4 1/2″ green background pieces on either side of the stem unit.  Make sure the bottom of the stem is in the correct location.

Pin the pieces in place and sew them together to form the stem section.

Press the seams toward the green background pieces.

Lay out this stem section along the bottom of the mushroom head.  Pin in place and sew these two sections together.

Press seam toward stem section.

Add the Spots to the Mushroom Quilt Block!

You’ll be adding 2” white circles to the mushroom head to finish off this easy mushroom quilt block!

Use the circle template below to make these spots.

Cut out the circle template and trace five circles onto the paper side of the double-sided fusible web.

Follow the directions on the fusible web to iron it to the wrong side of white tone-one-tone fabric.

Cut out the circles.

Carefully peel off the paper.

Lay your mushroom quilt block on your pressing mat right side up.

Place the circles where you want them to be on the mushroom head.

Press the circles in place.

Sew 2-3 times around each circle to permanently attach it to the mushroom!

Voila!  You’ve finished your Mushroom Quilt Block!!

The block should measure 12 1/2″ x 12 1/2″.  Trim if needed.

You can use this whimsical quilt block to make a Mushroom Quilt or Quilt Project!

Have fun(gi) with it all, lol!!

Happy, trippy quilting!
