Sauce for this Barbeque Smoked Pork Chops Recipe

The choice of BBQ sauce for smoked pork chops largely depends on personal preference, as different people have varying tastes when it comes to flavors and heat levels. However, here are a few popular types of BBQ sauce that go well with smoked pork chops!

Sweet and Tangy BBQ Sauce:

This type of BBQ sauce is a classic choice for pork chops. It typically has a balance of sweetness from ingredients like brown sugar or honey and tanginess from vinegar or mustard. It complements the smoky flavor of the pork chops nicely.

Smoky and Spicy BBQ Sauce:

If you enjoy bold and robust flavors, opt for a BBQ sauce with smoky undertones and a bit of heat. Look for sauces that incorporate ingredients like chipotle peppers, smoked paprika, or cayenne pepper. This type of sauce can add an extra layer of smokiness and spice to the already smoky pork chops.

Fruit-Based BBQ Sauce:

Fruit-based BBQ sauces, such as those made with peaches, apples, or cherries, can add a delightful sweetness and fruitiness to the pork chops. The natural sweetness of the fruits can complement the smoky flavor and provide a unique twist to the dish.

Mustard-Based BBQ Sauce:

Mustard-based BBQ sauces, commonly found in regions like South Carolina, offer a tangy and slightly acidic flavor. They pair well with smoked pork chops and can provide a zesty and bright contrast to the richness of the meat.

Homemade BBQ Sauce:

If you enjoy experimenting, consider making your own BBQ sauce. This way, you can tailor the flavors and ingredients to your liking. Homemade sauces often allow for customization and creativity to achieve the perfect balance of sweetness, tanginess, smokiness, and heat.

Ultimately, the best BBQ sauce for your smoked pork chops is the one that suits your taste preferences. In my opinion there are no losers!! But you may want to try different types and brands of BBQ sauce to find your personal favorite!

How to Cook Smoked Pork Chops with Barbeque Sauce

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) while you prepare the smoked pork chops.

For added flavor and texture, you can sear the smoked pork chops in a hot skillet with a small amount of oil or butter for about 1-2 minutes per side. This step is optional but can enhance the appearance and taste.  I like them when they’re just a little bit burnt even!!

Pour the desired amount of bottled BBQ sauce into a small saucepan. Heat the sauce over low to medium heat, stirring occasionally, until it is warmed through. Heating the sauce helps to enhance the flavors and make it easier to coat the pork chops.

Once the BBQ sauce is heated, you can choose to brush it onto the pork chops or drizzle it over the top. Use a basting brush or a spoon to evenly distribute the sauce on both sides of the pork chops. Make sure the pork chops are fully coated with the BBQ sauce.

Place the smoked pork chops in a baking dish or oven-safe skillet.

Put the baking dish with the smothered smoked pork chops into the preheated oven. Bake for about 10-15 minutes or until the internal temperature reaches 145°F (63°C) for medium doneness. The exact cooking time may vary depending on the thickness of the chops, so use a meat thermometer to check for doneness.

If you prefer a caramelized and slightly sticky BBQ glaze, you can return the sauced pork chops to the oven for an additional 5-10 minutes. Set the oven to broil and place the pork chops on a baking sheet. Keep a close eye on them to prevent burning. The heat from the broiler will help caramelize the BBQ sauce.

Cook Thoroughly!

Remember, the smoking process already partially cooks the pork chops, so the purpose of the baking step is to finish cooking and warm them through.

Once the pork chops are cooked, remove them from the oven and tent them loosely with aluminum foil. Let them rest for about 5 minutes to allow the juices to redistribute. This will help keep the chops juicy and flavorful. Serve the smoked pork chops hot, either as they are or with your favorite sides.

Here are some other popular options that pair well with the smoky and savory flavors of the pork chops!

A light and refreshing salad with mixed greens, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, and a tangy vinaigrette can provide a contrast to the richness of the pork chops.

Feel free to mix and match these sides based on your personal preferences and the overall theme of your meal. Don’t forget to consider the preferences of your guests when choosing side dishes as well.

Storing Leftover Pork Chops

You might not have any leftovers after this delicious meal!  But if you do here are some tips to properly store them!!

Allow the leftover pork chops to cool down to room temperature before refrigerating. Leaving them at room temperature for more than two hours can increase the risk of bacterial growth.

Wrap each pork chop individually with plastic wrap or place them in separate airtight containers. This prevents them from sticking together and helps maintain freshness.

Place the wrapped or containerized pork chops in the refrigerator within two hours of cooking. It’s best to store them on a shelf rather than in the refrigerator door, as the temperature is more consistent.

If you anticipate keeping the leftover pork chops for more than a day or two, label the containers or plastic wrap with the date of storage. This makes it easier to track their freshness.

Leftover pork chops can be safely refrigerated for up to 3-4 days. However, for optimal flavor and quality, it’s best to consume them within 1-2 days.

Can You Freeze Leftover Pork Chops?

If you want to store the pork chops for longer, you can freeze them. Wrap each pork chop tightly in plastic wrap and place them in a freezer-safe bag or airtight container. Properly stored, smoked pork chops can stay good in the freezer for up to 2-3 months. When ready to use, thaw them in the refrigerator overnight before reheating.

When reheating the leftover pork chops, ensure they reach an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C) to ensure they are safe to eat. You can reheat them in the oven, on the stovetop, or in the microwave. The exact method will depend on personal preference and desired results. Remember to discard any leftover pork chops that have been left at room temperature for more than two hours or show signs of spoilage, such as a foul odor or unusual texture.

Proper storage and reheating practices help maintain the quality and safety of the leftovers.

Enjoy!!
